Irish Runner 5 mile – 30 June 2012

A reasonable time considering the humidity of the day and the lack of running training (most training was for the Ring of Kerry cycle).

There was a little rain before I left the house but it stopped long enough for me to get to the Phoenix Park. I parked my bike at the finish line on Furze Road.

The starting area for the first wave was quite empty. I left the area to shelter under a tree when there was a light shower about 5 minutes before the start. As I lined up for the start I saw Mike, my sister’s brother-in-law, in his Portmarnock Athletics Club a few rows in front of me.

It was a warm, humid day and this was taxing. I saw Mike moving further and further ahead of me. Then, he stopped at the water station at the 3.5 mile mark and I passed him.

I pushed on up the Upper Glen Road and had a strong finish. I spoke with Mike after the race – he stopped at the water station because he was wrecked.

As I recovered after the race there was a short heavy shower. Luckily I was parked under a good sheltering tree.
